A report by Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) has revealed that thousands of Australians are still missing out on quality care despite the country having one of the best breast cancer survival rates in the world.
The State of the Nation report, which was presented at Parliament House last week, shows despite advances in treatment and services to the health system over the past 20 years, the standard of breast cancer care that Australians should expect is not accessible to all.
The report conducted over 18 months detailed 15,000 experiences of people living with breast cancer while highlighting the gaps that still exist.
Among this, the ratio of breast cancer nurses to metastatic breast cancer nurses is severely imbalanced despite changes implemented in the last five years.
We spoke to BCNA chief executive Kirsten Pilatti about what could be done to close the margin.
