No nursing workforce shortage in Australia — but why doesn’t it feel like it?

The nursing and midwifery workforce is the largest group of regulated health professionals representing approximately 60 per cent of the registered workforce in Australia, and contributes significantly to the health outcomes of individuals, families and communities. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage around the world, a common refrain has highlighted both a health workforce shortage and an increased sense of the value and importance of nursing and nurses.

  1. Excellent article. Thank you. I agree, if there is NO nursing workforce shortage, why are state health depts desperate to bring in overseas trained nurses. Why are the jobs pages full of positions for RNs, EENs and other care workers? Primary health care and the bush are all desperate to employ more trained nurses. How are our new grads being supported? Older nurses are keeping the workforce afloat and significant numbers will look to retirement within the next 5 years. We need HELP!!
